Australia boasts an impressive school network with state and private schools well represented. However, a third less common educational opportunity is boarding schools. Boarding schools are an option for international students needing a better education than that offered in their home country. But, there are also plenty of Australian children whose parents choose this path because there are no good schooling options in their area. As a parent who is ready to enrol their child into a boarding school, the way you sell this opportunity to your child plays a big part in the success of their attendance. So, remember PIC as you prepare your child for boarding school life.

P Is For Positivity

Long gone is a time when attending boarding school equals punishment for a naughty child. If you wish your child to embrace the upcoming experience rather than rebel against it, you need to make sure all information conveyed is positive. Firstly, provide them with a copy of the literature that helped you choose this particular school. Next, list the positive benefits this school offers versus distance learning done at home. If possible, take your child to the school for a first-hand look before the term begins. If a physical walkthrough is not available, show them videos from the school's website and social media pages. Use all information available to you to help sell the experience to your child.

I Is For Independence

Once your child arrives at boarding school, the staff will encourage and teach them to be independent and responsible for themselves in some areas of their daily life. You can begin this learning early by asking your child to be self-reliant at home. Little things like teaching them how to do their laundry and fold their clothes, how to clear away their eating utensils, and how to pack their bag for the school day are all independent steps that help your child stand on their own two feet.

C Is For Communication

Regular communication with your child while away from home helps ease homesickness, but too much communication is unsettling. Speak to the boarding school staff to find out:

  1. What communication choices do they offer the student. For example, are video calls available?
  2. Do you need to provide a communication device for your child, such as a cell phone?
  3. If you provide a cell phone to your child, what steps does the school take to discourage misuse?

PIC is the perfect way to start your child's preparation for boarding school life. The school you choose also has further information to help your child enjoy this educational journey.
